Thangaini Farmers’ Co-operative society operate eight wet mill factories in Muranga county, they are located between the capital Nairobi and infamous coffee-producing town Nyeri. They run up to the foothills of Mount Kinangop and the Aberdare range of mountains in the west. Coffee production is coming under a lot of pressure from other cash crops, but this year has seen a strong harvest. Many smallholder farmers produce coffee and bring it to a centralised wet mill for processing. Farmers take ripe cherries to be processed in centralized wet mills, where they are pulped, fermented overnight, washed and sun-dried in elevated tables. There are 900 members in the cooperative that together own this facility, with just over 80 hectares growing coffee. The factory itself was founded back in 1957. Most of the farmers grow SL34, though there is some SL28 and more recently Ruiru as trees are renewed. As a result, the beans are often fairly large, with around 20% classifying AA or over.
